Composed at the beginning of the 20th century,
Vaughan Williams’ song Towards the Unknown Region sets an evocative poem
by his American contemporary Walt Whitman.
In Windsor Forest was adapted by Vaughan Williams from his opera ‘Sir John in Love’, setting texts by Shakespeare and contemporary writers.
Vaughan Williams spent many years collecting folk songs from around England
and we will perform his arrangement of nos 1,3 and 4 of his Five English Folk Songs.
Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), premiered in 1871, is a setting of a poem
by Hoelderlin, while Schubert’s Four Partsongs show varied moods, beginning with
Lebenslust (Love of Life) and ending with Der Tanz (The Dance).
