On Saturday 21st March at 7:30pm
the London Pro Arte Choir present
works by Michael Haydn and Mozart
- Michael Haydn: Requiem in C minor
- Mozart: Vesperae Solennes de Confessore
Orpheus Sinfonia Orchestra
Tom Winpenny Conductor
Both these works were composed and performed
in Salzburg, where the composers were working
at the court and cathedral of the Prince-Archbishop.
Michael Haydn, like his older brother Joseph,
was a boy singer in Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
As an adult, he moved to Salzburg where Mozart,
who was nearly 20 years younger, was born.
Mozart played in the orchestra when Michael Haydn’s Requiem was performed
and it seems that it influenced some movements in Mozart’s Requiem,
composed at the end of his life in Vienna.
The Requiem sets the familiar words of that service.
The text of the Vespers comprises settings of psalms plus the Magnificat;
the fourth movement of the Vespers is the much-loved Laudate Dominum,
which is often performed alone.
In addition, we will sing Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, composed during his final year.
This touching motet was written in Baden near Vienna when he was visiting his wife,
who was staying at the spa.
